Is Bloating a sign of SIBO?
It can be. However, the symptom bloating is sadly also a symptom of many other digestive problems. Fat malabsorption, constipation and food intolerances can all cause bloating!
SIGNS that you are suffering from SIBO
bloating, usually very severe
feeling worse after carbohydrates, fruit, and often dairy and gluten or wheat
systemic symptoms, meaning outside of the gut. So joint pain, depression, fatigue and histamine issues such as skin reactions
Why does SIBO cause bloating?
Bacteria meant for the colon is ‘misplaced’ in the small intestine instead, where it’s given the opportunity to react with our food before it’s properly digested and absorbed. This produces gasses, inflammatory compounds
How Can I Test For SIBO At Home?
You can test for SIBO at home via a breath test. Bacteria in your gut will produce gasses in response to a solution you drink (representing food). These gasses then evaporates via the lungs (amazingly enough) which can be measured via the breath.
Testing for Other Bacterial Overgrowth
Microbiome tests looks at general bacterial growths and includes pathogens. This can give useful insights into WHY you might have SIBO too.
Can You Test Negative and Still have SIBO?
Other than your usual false positive/negativs’s, we believe that you can. Our article below includes more information around this.
Can you Test for SIBO with a Colonoscopy
No, this is not the purpose of a colonoscopy.
Is SIBO testing worth it?
SIBO can cause havoc with your gut as well as health, and is implicated in many inflammatory and pain conditions. It’s a relatively inexpensive test, and would therefore be justified in our opinion, where a person has inflammation or other ‘outside of the gut’ issues. IF you have only digestive issues, in many cases we would recommend a microbiome analysis to start with instead. Kindly read the comprehensive guide below for full information, or let us have your symptoms and we’ll help you decide what you need.
How You Test For SIBO at Home
The kit includes a sugary solution which you consume. After this, you take several breath samples using the equipment and instructions provided.
You simply then pop it all back in the kit box, and post it back, using the pre-paid box.
Please read the further instructions and information below.
The Results
The results will arrive with your assigned and qualified Nutrition Practitioner, who will forward you your results, together with your findings (positive/negative).
Carrying Out The Test
NOTE that carrying out SIBO tests requires you to go on a specific plain diet beforehand. Without this, you can’t measure SIBO accurately and your results may be false. If you carry out the test on the Sunday (takes a few hours) - you would start limiting what you eat after dinner on Friday evening. The diet consists of restricting fibre and some sugars, so for one day on Saturday, you’d mostly be eating things like white rice and chicken. If you are a vegetarian or vegan and want to know how to carry out this test, please get in touch.
